Review of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) by Jason D — 18 Mar 2009
Interesting character study played out with the contrasting personalities of Blanche and Stanley who, along with Stella try to figure out who they really are and what they should be. A bit melodramatic most of the time, and very much so at others.
Boring in the middle, but really ramped up at toward the end, you see Leigh's best acting, but it wasn't consistently good. Brando really shines for most of the film, too, and Malden is surprisingly good as Blanche's love interest.
I only wish the tumultuous climax was staged differently, but in the '50s, you could only do so much, and it was censored enough as it was. Overall, a must see for all film buffs.
