Review of A Star Is Born (2018) by Nelson W — 03 Nov 2018
Almost Flawless! Bradley Cooper has co-written and directed an instant modern classic retelling of the" old rocker discovers and falls for young pop singer" story. Lady Gaga more than fills the shoes (and the soundtracks) of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand while establishing herself as a bona fide actress.
The dialogue rings true, the pacing is pitch perfect, and the performances, including Sam Elliot as Cooper's put-upon older brother and Andrew Dice Clay as Gaga's starstruck father, are Oscar-worthy.
Most importantly, the original country-rock tunes. performed and often co-written by Cooper and Gaga, are Top 40-caliber. The chemistry between Cooper and Gaga is as natural and intoxicating as a pop-song melody.
Expect Cooper to be Oscar-nominated for directing, writing, acting and best song, with Gaga a shoo-in for a Best Actress nom.
