Review of A Star Is Born (2018) by Richard B — 27 Nov 2018
Going Gaga.
This is the 4th version of this classic and by far, the best. Even if you know what's coming, the film packs a wallop. All this is down to Bradley Cooper, Tommy Wiseau-like in starring, directing and part writing the script and the ugly duckling herself, Lady Gaga who belts her way from facelessness to stardom in great style.
I have never engaged much in Gaga, but she is ravishing - she is not beautiful but she is captivating. What makes the film work is the credibility of the relationship between the two stars and some very decent musical performances. Gaga can act. She is Oscar worthy as is Cooper for both acting and directing.
The story may be a chestnut, but it does play - star discovers potential star, shapes her success, loses her, loses his marbles, tops himself and surprise, surprise, the show goes on.
All delivered for maximum tissue use. It's a knockout.
