WANTED TO LIKE THE MOVIE, BUT ACTUALLY JUST KINDA GROSS. tYPICAL FILM (CLICHE, ALMOST) OF A YOUNG, HOPEFUL POP/BLUES/SOUL SINGER (WHITE) AND AN AGING, DISGUSTING DRUNK THAT HAS A HUGE AUDIENCE AND PLAYS M.
O.R. ROCK. fILM CREATES A SENSE OF AFFECTING AND LASTING SADNESS, LEAD CHARACTERS GET UNDER THE SKIN SOMEWHAT, BUT ULTIMATELY, POP MUSIC (AND THE INDUSTRIAL PROMOTION OF IT, TOURING ETC) IS A SHALLOW, OVER-DECORATED, DISPOSABLE BUSINESS.
thE PROBLEM WITH THE STORY AESTHETIC IS THAT THE AUDIENCE IS SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE BEING A POP STAR IS A HARD, GRITTY, GRIM, SOCIAL REALIST ENDEAVOR WITH ENDLESS PAIN AND LOSS AND EACH TURN. wHATEVER. lADY GAGA APPEARS THROUGHOUT, (WHO'SE REAL LIFE FAMILY HAVE A NET WORTH OF MILLIONS).
EXCELLENT VOCAL CAMEO FROM NZ FOLK/POP ARTIST MARLON WILLIAMS, AT ONE POINT. mOVIE, AS I SAID, IS WELL CRAFTED BUT PRESENTS MUSIC BUSINESS UNREALISTICALLY AND CONSTANT MESSAGE OF HARDSHIP AND LOSS FEELS SOMEWHAT FAKE COMPARED TO REAL LIFE ISSUES OF CONFLICT, LOSS AND DAMAGE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
no GREAT SONGS APPEAR IN THE MOVIE, ALTHOUGH DESERVES CREDIT FOR TALENTS OF BRADLEY COOPER AND COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL REALIST STYLE IN FACE OF VFX/COMPUTER EFFECTS DRIVEN STUFF.
