Review of A Star Is Born (2018) by Sarah G — 14 Oct 2018
#AStarIsBorn is even better than we hoped it would be. I'm not a betting person but if I were I'd bet everything on @ladygaga for @theacademy. And if anyone's a dead cert to win an #EGOT in next 5 years, it's her.
The Lady's performance is astounding and she has that rare, rare gift of being super talented at singing & acting & dancing & makes it look effortless. She's the only person alive I can think of who could have followed @barbrastreisand and been worthy of the role.
Actually, though, the ?? who is really Born in this movie is #BradleyCooper: he proves to be a very talented director- handling scenes that would test a seasoned pro to the limits and, perhaps even more exciting, he's a great singer too.
Huge respect to Bradley C for taking on this role & film. He's Out about being in long term #addiction #recovery (pix 2 & 3) and this role must have taken so much to go back into that pain.
Anyone who has experienced the trauma / humiliation of hitting #rockbottom will connect with his performance. His vulnerability and insight into the addict's crippling low self worth is so raw I had to work hard to keep my sh** together in the theater sat next to rising ?? River Gallo .
The script is very spare and well written- it doesn't preach but it gives context to #alcoholism and the disease.
I'm not going to give the ending away but I hope that it will help reduce stigma and increase empathy & understanding of why even the most talented 'with everything' have a long, hard road back to mental & physical health.
Rehab is just the start. But as Mr Cooper proves 100% 'recovery is possible'. And The Promises do come true. ??????????
