Review of A Star Is Born (2018) by Scooter P — 04 Oct 2018
So here's the tea: this movie is genuinely great, and I wasn't bored the entire time... but I felt like the hype of this film kinda killed the excitement for me. Make no mistake, I was SUPER excited to see this movie when everyone was talking about how life changing Gaga and Cooper's performances were.
.. and they were great, don't get me wrong. I just didn't find the movie earth shaking. Gaga has definitely stepped up her acting game from American Horror Story, and Cooper does his best impersonation of a drunk person this side of the Mississippi, but the plot is mushy and predictable, and I felt like they rushed through some key parts of the movie.
Also, it's hard to have sympathy for Gaga and her marital plight when she knew from the VERY FIRST DAY that Jackson Maine was a drunk asshole. Why would she get married to him if he has been proving himself to her since day 1 of them meeting? She knew what she was getting into, and she just wanted the fame.
Regardless, the acting is great, and a few key scenes in the movie were simply breathtaking in the acting department... but it was nowhere near my favorite movie of the year. I think they both probably deserve a nomination, but I've seen better performances this year than both of them.
