Review of A Star Is Born (2018) by Pooja K — 07 Oct 2018
A Star Is Born is a well put together movie that will largely appeal to female audiences who lust over Bradley Cooper and listen to Gaga in their cars. The direction is good, the music is fine, if you like country-ish rock.
It is a mixed bag of acting. Gaga was fair at best, and had the acting chops suitable for a high school play to the point that it was awkward to watch at times. Cooper's performance was solid, but the alcoholic mumbling, while for a purpose, was distracting at times.
Chappelle did a fine job in his small part, as did Elliot, as he always does. Over played cringeworthy moments and animal based heartstring tugs took away more than they added, the dramatic equivalent of horror genre jump-scares.
Award nominations will inevitably follow, but as long as they don't include Gaga in any acting category, that is fine.
