Just browsing the weekend paper, came across this article and thought I'd post, as it kinda relates to some of my previous entries ....

Interview with (recent) Country Hall of Famer, Kris Kristofferson, star of A Star is Born (1976 version with Barbra Streisand).

Weekend Herald Article, 30 July 2005.

[Currently performing in New Zealand].

In recent decades the turmoil around Kristofferson abated and his status as a gifted songwriter [most famously me and Bobby McGee, covered by Janis Joplin] and survivor has allowed his politically articulate side to emerge..

An advocate of human rights and vehemently opposed to his country's involvement in Iraq, he argues from the perspective of a former military man whose patriotism cannot be disputed..

The re-election of George W. Bush told him, there are a whole lot of people who don't read enough news, or know what's going on in the world. I find it hard to believe the same people who were so outraged by Pearl Harbour can feel its all right to make pre-emptive war on another country which hasnt even attacked us. Now that has become accepted behaviour. I cant imagine the America I grew up believing in behaving like that..

.

.

Kristoffersons political stance has cost him ("I'm almost unmarketable. Again".) but he believes his educational and artistic opportunities oblige him to speak out..

.

I had information that wasnt necessarily available to somebody who was working 9 to 5 and who couldnt get out and see things. Ive been all over the world and been able to look at it from many different perspectives. .

When I first left the country for school in England I remember getting in all kinds of scrapes in Europe about the United States. I thought they were all mistaken..

But the more information I got, the more I realised there were things I wasnt crazy about that my government was doing, and most is the disrespect for international law and treaties or organisations like the World Court and the UN..

At this point of time we should be able to work things out diplomatically instead of militarily..

Its up to people who have an audience or a means to express themselves to do it and make whatever difference they can. We dont live alone in the world, we [in the US] are going to pay for some of the abuses of power that are going on.
.

.

Kris sounds like a cool guy and someone who shares a lot of my own humanitarian views ... except about the 4th paragraph into the interview where he mentions Pearl Harbour ?I would have also commented on the brutal retaliation that the US took against the Pearl Harbour bombing. I'm not sure I believe 100% that the US should have nuked civilians at Hiroshima like they did. I don't see much difference between Hitler's "final solution" against the Jews and consider the Hiroshima bombing as the US version of a "final solution". .

.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you! .

.

If the rest of the world followed the same course of action as the US has done in the past, then Iraq would be dropping a nuclear bomb on the US in retaliation for invading their country! Scary thought!.
