Review of A Single Man (2009) by F L — 08 Dec 2010
Colin Firth has this appeal about him that I can't quite put my finger on it... This movie is about a middle-aged professor in the 60s trying to cope with the loss of his life partner. I believe it's the first gay role for Firth and he did a splendid job. The movie is Tom Ford's directorial debut - in case you didn't know, Ford is an American fashion designer best known for Gucci and his own creations under his own name. Knowing who directed this film you would expect a visual orgasm (if I may say) and Ford did just that. Fantastic cinematography, each frame is a spread in an editorial magazine, GQ, whatever... I love his play on color for certain scenes, like it's capturing the mood of the main character (colors are dull when he's feeling dull, then color comes to life when he meets a random James Dean look-a-like on his way to a convenience store). Not to mention Juliane Moore is in this. She plays ofcourse the fag-hag. We all know what that is don't we?
I've had a look at all gay-themed films to date and sex plays such an important part. You know what's refreshing about A Single Man? There is no sex scene.
