Review of A Single Man (2009) by Jason V — 26 Dec 2010
Deliberate, thoughtful, beautifully shot and designed, A Single Man is about a single day in a man's life. The day he decides his life is no longer living for. And because of that, the story doesn't cover a ton of territory.
Rather, it shows how intertwined two lives become over the course of 16 years and how...soul-draining it is to figure out how to live alone. Therefore, the audience is dropped into the middle of relationships without the benefit of seeing exactly how they started and matured over time.
Special note to the subtle use of color as George makes personal connections with the people around him. The picture will go from cold, isolating hues to pure warmth, as if his life is lighting up again around him one person and one interaction at a time.
