Review of A Single Man (2009) by Lee B — 12 Jan 2011
Think im on my own in giving this just 3 stars.
My first sentence may now seem to contradict those stars, as its a BRILLIANT film, watching a day in the life of a man as he prepares to take his life folllowing the death of his long term partner.
Very much a film for actors, theres no fancy special effects here, its all about the actor in front of the camera and Colin Firth is amazing. The emotions he conveys by hardly even moving his face, just mesmerising.
However, (the 3 stars bit) in a film I want to be entertained, I want to feel, and ultimately I want a payoff for my 90 minutes time investment. Although, through Colin Firth, I felt the sadness of his character, there is just no payoff.
Unfortunately with me, if any film leaves me more miserable than when I first sat down to watch it, its always going to be a 3 star film (Seven being the prime example, great film, but THAT ending......i can never watch it again!).
Great, great film, brilliant performances, fab direction......just a bit miserable.
