Review of A Single Man (2009) by Rachael H — 19 Feb 2011
Artsy! A beautifully shot film starring Colin Firth. it's really depressing and the black and white flashbacks really conveyed the sadness Firth's character felt at losing his partner. I really liked all of the close ups on people's faces, when they reminded him of what he'd lost.
I liked that they showed his relationship with the woman and he was almost willing to be with her as a substitute, but it wouldn't be 'real' love. I actually thought he might do something with Kenny. Although it wasn't really if he was just worried for his teacher, or if he was actually gay himself. They did hint at it though.
The end is heartbreaking. Redemption and then loss. It was very sudden and touching. Firth did a great job, he should get more attention for this than The King's Speech!
