Review of A Single Man (2009) by Gavin S — 06 Mar 2011
Tom Ford sure has style. Fashion Designer by day, this was his first venture into directing, and I have to say, it was fairly impressive. Lots of good looking people made up to be even more glamourous looking helped to balance the rather weighty subject matter.
Colin Firth is excellent as George (hmm...maybe he should always play someone named George and the Academy will recognize him) a man who's lost his partner of 16yrs (Matthew Goode in flashbacks) to a car crash and feels no will to live and has put all his affairs in order before he takes his own life.
The film follows George and how empty he feels, but also gives little glimpses into things that just maybe give him an interest in living. Julianne Moore plays his long time friend who still loves him and wants to be with him even though it's not going to happen.
Much more impressive is Nicholas Hoult (of About a Boy fame - wow he looks a lot different) as one of George's students who seems a lot more interested in George than just for school purposes. Gorgeous to look at, everyone's dressed impeccably (as the film is set in the early 60s California) and a well done study of someone who has nothing left to live for in his own mind.
