Review of A Single Man (2009) by David R — 03 Apr 2011
Surprisingly disengaging, considering what a subtle and gifted actor Colin Firth is (and he's very good here). But as the film moves forward, the experience of it feels a little aimless and over-stylized and kind of dull.
Its best scenes (like George's lecture about fear, or his awkward dinner with Charley, who seems a much sadder and more interesting character than her screen time allows her to be) feel like quick bursts of fresh air before we have to sit through more slow-motion sequences of malaise and longing and stasis.
And then the film ends. What has been learned or gained and how is fuzzy, throughout. This probably worked much better as a novel. I really wish Tom Ford had just gotten out of Colin Firth's way.
