Review of A Single Man (2009) by Danica A — 18 Dec 2011
A single day in the life of a single man is the basic plot for this beautiful film. Colin Firth plays George, a lonely man who is having a difficult time getting over the death of his lover Jim. Throughout this day George comes across and has conversations with several characters including an admiring student, a neighbor girl and a hot South American man, and has dinner with his long-time best friend Charley.
Intermixed with flashbacks of Jim, these meetings all show George a little bit about his life. Directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, literally every scene seems as if it's a perfume commercial, which is a good thing.
Things that many filmmakers these days don't seem to take into account are perfected by Ford, and this is his first movie. I could go on for hours as to why this is a perfect film. Everything from the editing, to the coloring (which change for mood), to the bone-chilling score, to the most important aspect, Colin Firth's acting, were perfect.
It might be a little slow for some, but this is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.
