Review of A Single Man (2009) by Hannah G — 22 Feb 2012
First-time director Tom Ford's fresh perspective, gift for visual communication, and clearly personal connection with his work make him a natural behind the camera. The film's elegant cinematography and design and Abel Korzeiowski's beautiful score are perfectly of a piece with Ford's sophisticated vision.
As glossy as it is on the surface, the subtlety and intelligence of the film is anchored in its haunting central performance. Colin Firth gives 2009's best performance; polished, sympathetic and lived-in; and Julianne Moore makes an indelible impression with only ten minutes of screen time.
