Review of A Single Man (2009) by Danny R — 11 Aug 2012
A powerful, visual stunning, poetic drama concerning a gay english college professor George Falconer, played by Colin Firth in a magnificent understated Oscar nominated performance that is truly moving, he deserves every acting accolade he has gotten for this film, who is left totally devastated by the death of his lover of 16 years after a tragic car accident, he is mired in depression and has simply lost the will to live, and is now planning his own suicide, but two people have given him hope to live on, his lifelong friend Charley, played beautifully by Julianne Moore and a young student from his class Kenny, played superbly by Nicholas Hoult who has been given a real showcase for his talent, charm and astonishingly good looks, it is a impressive performance.
Kenny appreciate George as a mentor and friend, but also clearly has a sexual desire for him. A brilliant directorial debut by fashion designer Tom Ford with this luminous film; which is based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood.
Gorgeous photography by Eduard Grau, with a memorable haunting score by Abel Korzeionski. A genuine work of cinematic art. Highly Recommended.
