Review of A Single Man (2009) by Jillian L — 06 Jun 2013
So, this is one of those that I watched for the cast, which although impressive, the direction and cinematography is what actually takes this movie to the next level. And then I found out that this is Tom Ford's directorial debut? I was really impressed.
The use of color, although blatant, is really effective in setting the tone. Overall visually, this was great to watch. Tom Ford also wrote the screenplay adaptation, which is really engaging. It gives the feel of going through a day in the life of someone without making it bland and drawn out, as "slice of life" scripts can be trapped into being.
And like I said, the cast is also impressive. Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult, and Matthew Goode are great supporting characters with Ginnifer Goodwin and Lee Pace making some short appearances. But for obvious reasons, this belongs to Colin Firth.
He carries the rest of the cast, and keeps you really engaged. Overall, this is a really interesting movie that packs an unexpected punch.
