Review of A Single Man (2009) by Alison J — 15 Jun 2013
...intriguing film ~ Colin Firth gives a compelling and very believable performance, a grieving and lonely male, hopelessly and seemingly irreversibly lost after the loss of his long term partner. George Falconer (Colin Firth) is a highly intelligent and complex figure, working as a lecturer at an American college and living in the emotional aftermath after the death of his male partner, Jim (Matthew Goode).
The tone set is a sombre one, against the backdrop of unhappiness and loneliness. There are flashbacks to happier times as Falconer reflects, and an exchange with a young student, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), as well as the chance meeting with another male, all combine to intrigue the grieving male and lighten the mood of the loneliness.
A flawed relationship with a female lover from the distant past, Charley (Julianne Moore), rears it's head, though Falconer does ensure all advances from the alcohol fuelled encounter are resisted.
All in all, a good film, and a brave one. Worth watching.
