Review of A Simple Plan (1998) by Gregory B — 08 Nov 2008
I loved Evil Dead and the first two spider-man movies but I think is by far my favorite Sam Raimi film. It seems that Raimi took a page from my favorite directors the Coen bros. for this one. This is the type of film noir that I wish would be done more often.
It is perfect in every way. From the opening sequence of Bill Paxton talking about how ordinary life is and how quickly it can change to the ending with its perfectly toned ending. I thought the acting (especially Fonda) was brilliant.
I was happy to see that Billy Bob didn't overdo his role which would have been extremely easy to do. And I usually hate Bill Paxton because I always feel like he over does his roles but I liked him in this movie.
I thought that the script from Scott Smith (who also wrote the novel) was a perfect adaption. I haven't read the book but there was no meaningless subplots that adaptions like to have. I also really enjoyed the sets and atmosphere that I thought was perfect and the suspense and violence was so well shot that I sometimes couldn't help but throw my hands in the air to show how amazed I was with these parts.
All in all a perfect fim noir in the vein of Fargo.
