Review of A Simple Plan (1998) by Rafael M — 26 Jan 2009
A really terrific drama that slowly grabs your attention and draws you in.
The concept is beautifully realised and as the stakes and the body count rise as the story progresses it's really hypnotic material.
Castwise, everyone is awesome. Bill Paxton is superb as a seemingly clever guy who tries to rationalise his behaviour and actions all the while being fed instructions by Fonda. She puts in an excellent performance here. Billy Bob is this film's secret weapon. Quite simply, the guy is heartbreakingly good and gives the film it's moral centre and a soul. The fact that Gary Cole turns up as well had me geeking out...
For me, this is Raimi's finest hour as a director. He pulls all of the strands of this story together and delivers a really strong and complete film. The scenery is stark and beautiful and the bleak ending feels true. A real gem of a film....
