Review of A Simple Plan (1998) by Frances H — 27 Jan 2014
"A Simple Plan" shows how quickly decent people can become evil. Based on Scott Smith's brutal novel (that was pinned down by its ending, which studio execs thought to be unacceptable), this is really a monster movie--but greed and suspicion are the monsters.
A take-off of Bogie's "Treasure fo the Sierra madre," Smith updates the story nicely with the added plus of this film's cast: Billy Bob is superior as the dim-witted brother and Fonda's character is a modern-day Lady Macbeth, soul-less and conniving while giving herself plausible deniability).
As to the ending, it is interesting to note that Smith altered the "why" but not the "how," which was an extra kick for fans of the novel.
