Review of A Simple Plan (1998) by Ken S — 21 Jan 2015
Sam Raimi's first real turn at a dramatic film is excellent. The cast is great, I even liked Bill Paxton as the lead character, Hank. Thornton gives a really fantastic performance as Hank's dimwitted brother.
The film has a tone that feels almost like a Coen Brothers film, which given Raimi and the Coens long history together isn't too surprising. Essentially Hank, his brother, and his brothers dumb friend stumble upon a crashed plane with $4 Million in cash inside.
..and they make a simple plan to hold onto the money until Spring (when the snow melts and the plane will most likely be found), and then split it up three ways and leave town. But of course these things never stay simple, and almost always find a way to become complicated.
Raimi did a great job directing, and the film is definitely recommended to anyone who likes a good caper/thriller/Coen-style film.
