Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Lily J — 06 Feb 2011
I have long been a fan of the Coens. This film is my new favorite of theirs. Larry Gopnik, the main character, is a latter-day Job. His wife wants a divorce. His son is a spendthrift. His student is trying to bribe him. His rabbis are not giving him the answers or solace he needs. His brother is a criminal. Life stinks.
As downbeat as this sounds, though, the film is full of humor. I found comfort in the bad things happening to Larry - this is how life often is. In the midst of tragedy, it is possible to go on before the final curtain.
A Serious Man is a seriously good film.
