Review of A Serious Man (2009) by John M — 26 Jun 2011
Food for the thinking man. Since I had been trying to see this movie for almost two months now, this has easily been my most anticipated movie of 2009, which is strange, being that the only two things I really knew about the movie was the makers behind it (The Coen Brothers) and what little information was given in, in my opinion, the perfect trailer.
The only thing you really need to know if you must is that it's loosely the Book of Job set in 1967 suburbia. This movie had a profound effect on me; I had been thinking about it for hours the day after I saw it so I saw it again the next night (something I don't think I've ever done before), and I'm still thinking about it.
The Coen Brothers have given me some of my very favorite movies, and I would even go so far to say that this is the movie where they have the most to say. It raises questions about religion and morality and is just damn thought provoking.
Also, it is quirky, even by Coen Brothers standards; it's probably the Jewiest movie ever made (combination of Jew and chewiest).
