Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Sreedhar K — 15 Sep 2011
For many of us, Coen Brothers' 'A serious man' may have been lost in the shuffle of the 10 Oscar nominees of 2009, when 'The Hurt Locker' won the trophy, and 'Avatar' was the focus of a lot of attention.
The movie is a dark period comedy (the midwest in the mid 60's) about a physics professor, Larry Gopnik. "Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you" - it opens with that famous quotation from the medieval French rabbi Rashi, and goes on to show how Larry does when life takes him through the wringer every which way he turns.
The movie won an Oscar (among many other awards) for best original screenplay by Coen Brothers and a Golden Globe for Michael Stulbarg (Larry) for best actor, but it is an all out winner for acting, casting, cinematography, and directing as well. It is part Woody Allen, part Quentin Tarantino, and a signature Coen Bro's in a very brilliant way!
