Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Wilson B — 26 Sep 2011
Being a goy, who am I to judge such a film? Ha ha! A Serious Man is universal in its themes and the questions it poses while still rooting itself very specifically on the cultural and temporal map of America.
Its funny and touching at the same time, though its bleak outlook will alienate many viewers. Leave it to the Cohen Brothers to thematically tie their movie together with two lines from a Jefferson Airplane song mouthed by a senile Rabbi.
And of course, they manage to pull it off quite well. To those of you who are interested, it helps to do a little research on the inspiration for this film. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll let you figure it out.
Consider it a life lesson. As the Cohen brothers have shown, there may be no answer to your questions, and even if there are, you have to discover them for yourself.
