Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Katie B — 02 Nov 2011
A retelling of the Book of Job, sans redemption. The storytelling and acting are marvelous, making this yet another close-to-perfect film for the Coen Brothers. The Coens have a gift for telling dark stories with deft flashes of humor and profundity, and A Serious Man is no exception.
Ultimately, this story is existentially nihilistic with an ambiguous ending, which, although it echoes the thematic motifs throughout the movie, left me feeling as unfulfilled as Larry Gopnik. And identifying with the protagonist is a mark of great writing, so I tip my hat (with respectful reluctance) to you, Joel and Ethan.
Brava.
