Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Tanvir M — 08 Dec 2011
I have mixed feelings about this movie. While the making, cinematography and acting are impeccable, typical for a Coen Brothers' movie, the Jewish metaphors and rituals come across a bit too much, making it a movie targetted to a niche (or may be everyone else got the references easily!).
However, performances from a relatively unknown cast is top notch. The caveat is that the viewers expecting neat resolution to all the issues raised will be disappointed and left unsatified. But those who believe that not all loose ends can be tied, and life has its share of unresolved mysteries (not everything has a point or direction!, a recurring motif in the film) and strands going in no particular direction or multiple directions will find strange consolation in this film.
For viewers of atypical and highly unorthodox fare only!
