Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Anders N — 05 Jun 2011
This is, without a doubt, the sickest, most disturbing, most twisted film I have ever seen. And that is coming from someone who has seen more films that film geeks twice my age have seen. This film makes "The Human Centipede" look like "Finding Nemo".
Do NOT even bother watching it unless your threshold for being repulsed is at an insanely high level. With that said, the film is honestly a well shot, well edited, and well acted film, and the actors in the film aren't denizens of sloppy B pictures but apparently respected actors from Serbia.
The film has disturbing moments, more disturbing than any film I've witnessed, but it mostly feels in line with the plot of the film, and is actually a pretty scathing commentary on the pleasure industry it is meant to portray.
The film actually begins in a somewhat subdued manner, and at first I didn't see what the fuss was about. Within about 30-40 minutes though........I was literally floored by how shocking the imagery was.
This isn't a film that you are meant to "love", and it is absolutely a film that is meant to make you highly uncomfortable and horrified by. One of the reasons for its positive review is that it succeeds on a monumental level in regards to what it sets out to accomplish.
This is the "Aristocrats" joke of films, pushing the boundaries off the edge, and then falling off a cliff, and then running back with an axe and chopping the edge into pebbles.
