Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Duncan S — 13 Oct 2010
A retired porn star is lured out of retirement by a meglomaniacal director for one last, very well paid, job. Only when he starts work on the film does he start to realise that it will include necrophilia, rape, murder, torture and child rape.
Drugged and held against his will he desperately tries to escape to return to his wife and child. According to the director this is about the molestation of the Serbian people by a government who hypnotize people into doing things they would never normally do.
As such, you can see where he was going with it, but you cant help feeling that he just went that little bit too far! Despite all the controversy around the film, the violence is certainly nothing like what we've seen in the likes of Hostel and the sex scenes, for such a controversial film, are quite tame.
It's the scenes with the children that really shock (which is probably the point), and these are the scenes that will be cut by the BBFC. On the plus side, it is very well acted, beautifully shot and directed and has a great score.
