Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Sergio M — 26 Oct 2010
Meh. pft. supermeh. it looks ok and the actual story is better than I expected, but meh pft supermeh. I could have been worse, but it certainly could have been much better. there was a glimpse of genius, but it only lasted half a second, when you actually think that he's reluctantly feeling turned on by it all; they should have gone that way.
but, instead, they chose to keep on trying to 'outsick' themselves. yes, yes, everything pretty sick, yes, blah blah. I didn't even crinch once. why? because once you drug the main character and he becomes a brainless sex zombie, you are also actually killing him as a character.
no brains = no sense of tragedy, i'm afraid. but when he actually comes round and realises what he's done, it's too late for the viewer as we've witnessed it all and have had time to digest it.
the end is rather good, though. not talking about the big gory climax (which was more than predictable from scene one, by the way, apart from the cock in the eye-socket bit), but talking about the actual ending.
that was good. probably the best (or the only good, rather) thing in the film.
