Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Zed C — 05 Mar 2011
6/10 - Finally got to see this flick and... well... eh. Was it violent? Yea. Was it controversial? Yea. Was it the most vulgar thing I've ever seen? Nope. I'm not really sure what I was expecting. You read reviews and hear things said, but really, I just use stuff like that as a starting point. I remember hearing how 300 was "uber violent and super bloody". Was it? Shit, not really. Same for Haute Tension. Overrated shit. This flick was at least a decent flick. No story mind you, just some pseudo intellectual tack on crap about how Serbia is being raped or something. The base story is worth thinking about tho. A guy wanting to do something to help his family and set them up for the future. Not to spoil, but it doesn't turn out that way.
The biggest controversy was the "infant rape". Was I expecting that scene to be graphic? Yup. Did I want it to be? Nope. Was it? Nope. It was completely implied, and really, that worked much better than actually showing a dude rape and infant. Just the thought alone is enough to make you go "ugh".
The big scene at the end worked for me tho. I knew what was going on, so I had that sense of "awwww sssshhhhit!". The end shot made me think, "Uhm, the sequel will be Another Serbian Film then?" LOL!
Hey, this sure a shit isn't everyone's cup of tea, that's for sure, but if you're looking for something different, and have the constitution to handle the harsher scenes, check it out if you can track it down.
