Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Cody U — 16 Dec 2011
Well, like most films of this nature, all of the hype leading up to me finally getting to see it almost managed to ruin the viewing experience for me. After reading about this film for about 6 months, it was impossible for me not to get my hopes up, but that is my fault, not the filmmakers'.
Now, to clarify, I'm not sure if I managed to see a completely uncut version of this film or not. I bought the blu-ray that Invincible Pictures put out in the US. I have read that this cut is missing something like 7 or so minutes, but I'm not sure if that's even true, so perhaps there are important things in the truly uncut version of the film that were cut, I really don't know for sure.
But, now that I've revealed which version I'm reviewing, I'll continue. This film does have some shocking sexual violence. Some that is on the disturbing side, and some a little more humorous.
But nothing so bad that I was ever truly disturbed. Now, the ending is quite special, and nothing that I would even think about ruining here. It certainly ties the film up in such a way that you do kind of get that dirty feeling for having watched it.
(like you're supposed to get with this sort of film, a la Cannibal Holocaust or Salo) But as I said earlier, for a truly desensitized gorehound, there's nothing truly horrible shown explicitly in this movie.
I would recommend it, but only to true horror aficionados who are A. desensitized and B. even remotely interested in it. Never heard of it? Don't seek it out.
