Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Stuart M — 04 Feb 2012
Firstly I do not recommend this film to anyone, if you watch it that's your choice.
I gave it 5 stars as a horror movie, only by using the allegory of what happened to Serbia was I able to resolve this film. And it is very well acted, frighteningly possible and goes places where it's perhaps better not to go or think about.
It was a film when after I saw it I said I would not watch again, but it turned out the version I watched had a few cuts, but I had the chance to see a fully uncut version and so watched it again. Strangely even though more was shown, and more extreme, probably due to the second viewing it became more allegorical and while a challenge the second watch was worthwhile, two to those who say they will never watch it again should think again, if you can stomach it,know since you know what's coming you can look at other aspects and levels of the film.
In the UK it has been released with around 6mins of cuts, I'd advise, if you want to watch, you find an uncut version, import the uncensored DVD or rent the cut DVD and play the uncensored version but do something to ensure the creators get paid.
This film takes the genre to it's extreme, if there were not the directors allegory to rationalize what is seen then it would be un-watchable.
If you watch it, that's your choice, I also think watching it could damage some people. But for doing what the director said, pushing the boundaries, and for how horrific and disturbing this film is I must give it 5 stars.
