Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Michael J — 28 Jun 2012
There are a lot of things that can be said about this movie. Positive things. Rather than give the details of my attempt at describing what this movie means to me, I'll just say that you are probably going to get from this movie what you put into it and a lot of that is going to be based on you opinions of movies, art, yourself, people and possibly humanity.
I think that this movie is very well done! I think it is a movie that has depth but is not pretentiously abstract or obnoxiously clouded in a sea of complex and disorienting symbolism or free association that is potentially more private to the director or that would only be able to be understood by a very very small percentage of its watchers.
This movie WILL only be understood or attempted to be understood by a relatively smaller percentage of its viewers im sure, but I do not think that it is as inaccessible as some "art-house films".
Despite its ruthlessness, I believe that it is an attempt to reach out to a humanity that it (the movie, director, etc) believes may still be shaken from its de-sensitized and 'detached from the suffering of the world' complacency, and I suppose that is all I'll say.
The only reason I did not rate it higher is because I don't see it as a movie I will watch time and time again.
