Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Ibraheem M — 23 Nov 2014
As an Eastern European person, I can say that it strikes a different chord with me than those who didn't have to live through the awful 80s. It's refusal to ever back down once the depravity starts is what makes it a good film.
It's an odd metaphor that wasn't most likely ever supposed to leave the country or region since outside of that area its meaning is lost. If you haven't had to live like a starving animal constantly fighting and wondering where you next meal would come from then you'll miss the point.
The only thing it does wrong in my opinion is never let up, never giving the audience a chance to breath. It constantly tries to top itself in its depravity and in turn accidentally cartoons itself. Which I guess could be argued as having been done on purpose, since those who've been beaten so consistently with differing degrees of intensity just have to laugh at some point at the new absurdity.
If you're going to view this film, do your history first and see what hell communism and dictators wrought on their people in that era. Our protagonist was a lucky man to come out as well as he did.
