Review of A Separation (2011) by Tim H — 04 Apr 2012
This Iranian movie is set in contemporary Tehran, with an excellent plot and acting. A fascinating insight into contemporary Iranian culture and its medieval legal system; particular the difficulties for women as second class citizens.
Sometimes I think we in the West take too much for granted. Many Australians do not realise how fortunate we are to have our modern democratic and legal institutions. The circumstances of the movie are so depressing that I wouldn't be giving it 4 stars if the plot and the acting was not so good.
This film is not so much about tyranny as about medieval cultures and institutions; and how this makes difficult life circumstances almost impossible. I felt sorry for almost all of the characters - there are no real 'baddies' in it - except for the medieval culture of Iran.
