Review of A Separation (2011) by Lambert L — 20 Oct 2012
Satisfies a great thirst for seeing the real Iran and getting a chance to see what happens when the fear of God plays a dominate part in much of the society. But, in the end, the fear of having something bad happen to one's daughter, the attachment to one's ancestors, and the fear of bodily harm or possibly death at the hand's of one husband, plus the knowledge we all have that the printed law cannot really encompass the justice that comes from the living God, play an equally important, if not dominate role in everyone's actions.
Despite the qualities and shortcomings of the major players, if everyone had stood firmly by the truth, whenever it was revealed to them, there would have been no real case...[spoiler alert] (The husband lied, the caretaker suppressed the truth - and her husband was willing to give up the truth to get the money.) The funny thing is, no one actually committed a crime in the primary situation. (Ok, it's not really that funny.).
Oh, and did I forget to mention? A really really excellent film.
