Review of A Scanner Darkly (2006) by Ryan K — 13 Oct 2009
I'm surprised at how dismissive most reviews of this movie are. It's not just a mind-bender with some fancy visuals. They serve a purpose beyond looking like a comic book (which is totally awesome by itself) It shows the the distorted and drug-ravaged worldview of the characters.
It's commentary on drug use and the war on drugs is intelligent and thought-provoking. I felt for the characters and was crushed by the ending. I also thought it was a better movie than 'Requiem for a Dream' which was almost counter-productive in it's brutal depiction of drug use, leaving the viewer with a sick stomach and mild depression.
This movie is different. It's hard to explain WHY...but it's better. When it was over, I didn't say to myself "man, I am TOTALLY NEVER GUNNA USE DRUGZZZ", but instead...I wanted to reach out and help anyone who's ever abused drugs or had an addiction. I I felt for the PEOPLE, instead of being scared away from it all by being shown a horrible situation.
