Review of A Scanner Darkly (2006) by Seth M — 29 Dec 2009
Have you ever been to a party where people are drinking and you are not? It might be entertaining for the first 20 minutes or so, but you soon realize "these people are idiots." That is what "A Scanner Darkly" is like.
There is a point about drug use and the corporations that profit from it buried in there somewhere, but Linklater obfuscates it with scenes of drug users being... well, drug users.
I still got a kick out of the intriguing Rotoscoping and the usage of it, which fit well with the film and didn't feel forced. Plus, I always enjoy watching Robert Downey do his thing, and here he is a joy to watch.
"A Scanner Darkly" some original ideas that make it interesting to watch, but no emotional content, like its drug-addled characters. Watch it if you are a fan of Downey Jr. and have already seen "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.".
