Review of A Scanner Darkly (2006) by Danny R — 17 Apr 2010
For those of you who have not read the book by the late Phillip K. Dick. it tells the story within the framework of a surreal science fiction thriller, of him and his drug experiences with his friends in early 70s, and how it damaged and destroyed them.
The tale takes place seven years in the future, where a deep cover agent played by Keanu Reeves in a solid performance who is addicted to drug called substance "D" a very popular and highly addictive hallucinogen, that causes personality splits.
Now he is working to arrest his drug-dealing alter ego! Their is two standout performances by Robert Downey jr. and Woody Harrelson as his flaky friends, who engage in some hilarious conversations that are truly memorable.
A visually stunning film with rotoscope animation that is absolutely breathtaking, each frame is animated by hand. A dark satire with a cool premise, and a superb use of abstractions as reality. Highly Recommended.
