A Scanner Darkly equips itself with a truly dark story and bright layover animation. The look and feel of this film is what sets it apart. The look and feel make up for other small issues like pace and that 'memento'ish "what the heck is going on" from time to time.

Towards the end, the story really comes together, and Keanu is surprisingly fantastic in his animation clothes. Seriously, slap a little color and a great adapted screenplay on the fella and it does wonders.

The plot is extremely interesting and by the end of the film you are ready for that 'great ending'. Unfortunately, that ending is cut an act short... Not sure if it was staying true to the book or if the time and effort had just ran out... either way... this is one of those films where the viewer is screaming sequel - but I doubt it will ever happen.

The first hour intrigued me... the last 20 min had me glued..... and PERHAPS the greatest last 20 minutes in animation history was left out when the story abruptly ended in the storm of greatness.
