Review of A Scanner Darkly (2006) by Tyler M — 31 Mar 2012
It makes me sad to think that this film is going to go down in history as "that movie that used that wierd cartoonish art style".
It bothers me that many people will overlook Waking Life as the real pioneer of the art style... Though I didn't really like Waking Life, and the story itself is very different, and the fact that WL had a different, less realistic art style to it, it still makes me sad to think that Scanner Darkly is going to be the one that people cite as the first because of it's more comercial success and bigger production values.
Onto the actual review though.lol... The story is a little confusing until the last 10 minutes, it's more or less broken down into a simple cycle of repetition. Watch the misadventures of some drug addled 30-somethings, watch Reeves wander through his good guy side story, rinse and repeat. Some things make little to no sense, the script is pretentious, the story itself doesn't really go too far too fast, yet everything is mildly entertaining.
The cel-shaded style works and people that know what Killer 7 is will surely agree that if it's ever made into a movie or animated series of sorts this is the way needs to be done.
Reeves gives a good performance, maybe he can actually act.
Robert Downy Jr. is great but it's a character we're used to by now.
Winona Ryder gives a small yet important performance. Not her best not her worst.
Woody Harrelson steals the show, he needs to be in more movies.
