Review of A Royal Affair (2012) by Wendy K — 11 Sep 2012
Toronto International Film Festival 2012. Written and directed by the same screenwriter for original "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and produced by Lars von Trier, the movie is basically about a love triangle in 18th century Danish royal court.
If you liked "The Young Victoria" or "The Other Boleyn Girl", you will -love- this. This movie is not for everyone because not everyone will like historical dramas, but this movie does such a great job in keeping in exciting.
Like some historical epics, there are some parts that are a tad slow, but it is a historical drama, so that should be expected. However, because it's the screenwriter for Swedish "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" the story is goes by nicely.
The main trio of actors are so well cast in their roles. There are some humourous parts in the movie (the antics of the mentally ill king), but there are some tense moments when you're unsure if Mads Mikkelsen is a 'good' character or a 'bad' character.
Anyway, I'm doing such a horrible job reviewing this movie, but honestly, go see it. It's really really beautiful and it's also well-scripted that it doesn't -feel- like 2.25 hours!
