Review of A Royal Affair (2012) by Rostek P — 25 Nov 2012
Mikkel Boe Følsgaard delivers a performance that's so energetic and full of life that I forgot about the film's many flaws and enjoyed it because of that performance. I really cared about Christian and wanted him to wake up and look around himself.
But I have many issues with the film: Alicia Vikander's performance is dull and she lacks the intelligence and naivite of Caroline Mathilde. She lacks the charm, I didn't see the journey there -- of a girl becoming a woman and daring to dream big and to live, to love (the wrong man!), to refuse to be held prisoner and to think for herself, to manipulate, to use her sex appeal and so on.
. I didn't see it. I saw a little spoiled girl with no spiritual life, with no passions. And of course the script ignored the ideas behind the story and makes it all about the love affair. And they had so many possibilities - after all take a look at Per Olov Enquist's novel! The production design is spot on.
