Review of A Royal Affair (2012) by Sandy K — 05 Jun 2013
A sumptuous 18th century period drama based on the true story of the Danish King Christian VII's marriage to a member of the English royal family, and his friendship with a German doctor who sees the beyond the king's insanity to mentor him in enacting Enlightenment changes in the country.
The love triangle of the doctor and the queen is the focus of the film, but the director's patient pacing brings out the full measure of political maneuvering and the societal tensions of the period.
Too bad they didn't go for a bit more authenticity with the language of the dialog (which should have been French -- the language of court -- rather than Danish), but that's a quibble in an otherwise engaging and beautifully filmed story.
