Julian Sands seems incapable of being in anything good after this, but he's perfect for George (Mark Kermode be damned). Lushly photographed, perfectly scored, well-acted- Denholm Elliot, may he rest in peace, was perfection in this.
I fell in love with this movie at the age of 12 and it still works for me, all these years later.
