Review of A Room with a View (1986) by Katie S — 29 Mar 2008
Definitely a quintessential British period drama. Beautifully adapted, filmed, and acted, there really is no complaint I could make about this movie -- except that in being so British, you're almost always kept at arm's length emotionally. Not always, of course, but I didn't feel as as drawn in and sympathetic to Lucy's internal conflicts as I might've been.
Daniel Day Lewis steals the show here. Who would've thought that a preening snob could be so delightful to watch? Just a lingering shot of his glowering face as he rides away in the end speaks so much. (I can imagine any number of Wodehouse-ian sequels revolving around him. "Cecil Buys a Hat". "Cecil at Odds with Strauss". "Cecil Visits a Cheese Shop". Such possibilities!).
