Review of A Room with a View (1986) by Thomas L — 31 Dec 2008
Anything by Mr. Ivory and the late great Mr. Merchant can't be all bad. This one's one of their best. The cast is amazing, peopled with British actors who, back then, were on the cusp of movie greatness, and now are practically household names (e.
G. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Julian Sands, Helena Bonham Carter, and Daniel Day-Lewis). Mr. Day-Lewis' character Cecil is reason enough to see this. If you only know him from his later work, this'll make you watch in awe.
Plus he's just hilarious. This story is a fascinating snapshot of the British class system, in all it's comical rigidity, just before it was eviscerated by the Great War.
